Milkay, one of the biggest felt producers of the world, strengthens its position as the indispensable supplier of mattresses and furniture manufacturers in many parts of the world each day with a daily production capacity of 150 tons. Milkay, which dominates 55% of the market in Turkey alone, has been main supplier in these sectors for 25 years.
Abdullah Nursaçan, Assistant General Manager of Milkay, has shared his knowledge about the environmentally friendly production processes of the global Turkey-based Milkay brand for Sleep Well.
Could you please tell us about the development of your company since the day it was established? What has been your main philosophy in production?
When the company was founded in 1994, the company had an Italian partnership. MİLKAY as a word consists of the first three letters of MILANO AND KAYSERI cities. The company produces the felt and wadding used in spring mattress, spring sofas, automotive parts, furniture and the isolation sector. We offer our products which we carefully produce using the latest technology in the sector in local market and markets abroad. We love production and producing. We have a wide perspective, and we are focused on development. We respect people and the environment. We act with this philosophy in our business.
Could you please tell us about your product range and their area of use? Which products of yours are most in demand?
We can produce standard products such as soft felt (Termobond), hard felt, ultra-hard felt in requested sizes, from 500 gr/ m2 to 2500 gr/m2 weight. In addition, we can make special felts to the desired tactile feel with the requested technical conditions. Hard felt especially works as a spring top insulation material especially in the spring mattresses and soft furniture group. We also produce wadding from cotton, wool and other synthetic, natural products.
What are the most important criteria in production? In your opinion, what are the most important features that distinguish your products from other brands’ products?
We believe our future depends on our ability to satisfy our customers. We realize this ambition by offering superior quality and service and we continue to be a reliable partner for our customers. The relationship between us and our customers is not only a client, supplier relationship. It is a bond of communion. We think creating a culture is important and development can be possible together. It is not only our products but our way of doing business that makes us who we are.
What is your daily production volume? Could you please give us information regarding your influence in the local market?
We serve our customers with a capacity of 150 tons per day. We are the market leader with 55% market share in the local market. MİLKAY is first on people’s minds when felt is referred to.
Which brands do you cooperate with and which countries do you export to?
All sector players above 50 item/bed daily are our potential target audience. We collaborate with all valuable companies based in Turkey and which have reached significant brand value. MILKAY is the chosen, preferred brand in 55 countries worldwide. We have been supplying the world’s largest mattress manufacturers for over 25 years.
What do you think about the development of smart and technical textile in Turkey and abroad?
Because of mass production, easy use, cost advantages and its ease in recyclability, the technical textile sector has become concentrated in Turkey in direct proportion to the world. Based on the areas of use, there are technical textiles in more than 20 main lines of business. These products, which are defined as non-woven fabric, are classified as felt. Felt is widely used in sectors such as furniture and construction.
Could you tell us about the company’s approach regarding sustainability and environmental friendly products? What kind of activities do you conduct within this scope?
We act respectful to the environment as a sector company. We recover 50,000 textile waste annually so that they can be used again in the economy. We think that there is not enough consideration in our country regarding the recycling of textile waste. We believe in the importance of creating a national textile waste collection strategy action plan, and we are conducting activities accordingly.
What is the significance of R&D for Milkay? What kind of activities do you conduct regarding this?
Quality is one of the most important conditions for a sustainable company existence. Our company manages process starting from raw material input control, intermediate control and eventually final control. We are continuously conducting R&D within the company and employ a team for this purpose. We have been producing our 100% polyester-based MILFORM product since 2016. It has found a place in the sector as a polyester foam, an alternative to foam use.
What would you say about your future projects and investments?
Economic conjuncture and our ability to invest keep Milkay always ready and vigorous. In addition, we aim to bring at least 50,000 tons of textile waste back to the economy this year.
